Can You Potty Train a guinea pig?

Question

With a litter box im currently buliding him a cage adn do not want to fill the entire thing with bedding its a rather large cage if any1 knows if tis possible or any tips it would be great

Yes! Get the Animal Planet book on pigs. It has a ton of other great info as well as potty training. You just need a plastic box for it. I ahve 8 pigs who are allowed to run free in half my room and they are all potty trained. Just be patient. Nothing worth doing with them is instant.

Not all will learn to be potty trained, but some will. They will usually pick one corner to go potty in, so put the litterbox there. When you notice them going to the bathroom, place them into the litter box and they will start to catch on. They can only be trained to pee in the litterbox, they will still poop wherever they are. Is your cage a C&C cage? Fleece is a cheap bedding for large cages. See the forum at www.guineapigcages.com for a full explanation of fleece.

if you guinea pig uses that potty in one area, then just put a small box with any litter in the place. Don't worry about special litters, most pigs dont care....but it depens on you pet. I have 2 Guinea pigs and they use the potty whenever wherever, so that wasnt an option.

yes you can. guinea pigs tend to only go to the bathroom in a single spot, so you have to first find this spot, then just put the little box there, and wait for him to get the hint. or you could try putting a little bit of soiled bedding in the box so, hell know where to go.

i know for a fact that this works with gerbils, hamsters and rats, so it couldnt hurt to try with a guinea.

They allready know how to potty. LOL
Being a rodent, their thinking is more programmed toward food and mating than to do something as intelligent as be potty trained.
I sure could have worded this better.

Yes, at stores like petco they sell a rodent litter that they will instinctiveley use
