Most of the college students I know can't even spell certain words and they have a degree? Why is it cool now in America to be "dumbed-down"?

you don't need to know how to spell to get into heaven so why worry about it?? If it bothers you don't talk to people who aren't able to spell correctly.

It isn't necessarily cool, but in the social arena of the college world, it just isn't important. When you're at a frat party, are you really going to want to talk about Shakespeare? No, you're going to try to hook up with the drunk kid on the dancefloor. And if you do try to talk about Shakespeare, you get funny looks for brining academics to a party.

The reason college students appear to be dumb is because public high school education is inadequate- it doesn't prepare students for college very well at all. The standards are low, and the way some material is taught just doesn't work to the kids' advantage. For example, teaching science according to "the scientific method," as my high school did, leaves kids thinking that "the" method is the only way to do science. Or, teaching a kid that a good paper follows the format of one paragraph introduction, three paragraphs support and one paragraph closing, leaves kids thinking that a good paper is five paragraphs long. Even more than that, the work in American high schools just isn't that hard! They teach to the bottom of the class, so even the worst and dumbest students can graduate. Rather than trying to get those kids to excell, they teach all the kids at the same (low) level so everyone is on equal footing. It's not a terribly effective approach.

And by the way, I'm a college freshman. Clearly, you're talking to the wrong students.

One word indoctrination for some reason a lot of college professors try to get their students to view the world the way they do. It also seems like most want to rebel from normal society just to do it. It also has to do with teachers in grammar school not being allowed to tell children they aren't going to pass. Teachers just have to sit back and tell the students the fact that they can't read in high school is not their fault. Its society in general. Its to willing to push off failure and try to keep someone smiling instead of telling them the truth.

Yea my professor showed us some papers American students wrote. They go real easy on the grading so Cs make degrees. Most are juglging 40 hours and cars and girls, too much to handle.

Not all college students are dumb. Some work very hard to get their degree and diploma.

They may do very well with book smarts but lots of simple every day things seem to pass over them, or be beneath them.

You've obviously never been to a college party. Go to a couple and see what I mean.

Because that is a idea you chose to manifest and come to fruition in your own mind. Your question, or rather your bold and generic statement, is simply untrue.
