What makes a person an Uncle Tom?

Uncle Tom is another name for the more harshly said "house n*****" Basically this was the slave that was a butler. At the time of slavery, this person basically had it easy compared to the field slaves. They got to eat and sleep in the house, albeit in the basement or attic, but they weren't subjected to the heat and hard work like their field counterparts. The Uncle Toms would also tell their slave masters whenever the field slaves did wrong or slacked off and in turn upset the slaves.

When the civil war neared and slaves started moving up north. The house slaves wanted to stay behind because they felt they were treated more respectfully. They didn't want to go north and be free because basically the thought being free and having to find work in non-slavery times were tougher than their life as a butler.

An Uncle Tom is an expression of scorn used mostly by black people to describe a black man who subjigates him self to the white man...a "yes, massa" kind of person who fears the white man because of the perceived power he thinks the white man has over him. Thankfully, it's an expression that's not much needed anymore. Not many Uncle Tom's left in today's society.
