I don't remember exactly, but once I was told about an island that had to be evacuated. The master of the dog had to leave him behind, because there was no room for it on the boat in which he and other people escaped. After reaching land, the man realizes the dog had been following him, and dies after coming out of the water. I believe a statue was made in his honor.

Don't know, but there are similar stories. Check out the Akita, national dog of Japan and the Central Park statue of the lead sled dog that saved hundreds of lives in Alaska by delivering vaccine. The "Akita" story is similar except the master dies and the faithful dog goes to the train station everyday to meet his master.
