poem in a book....lord of the rings....jrr tolkien

all that is gold does not glitter
not all those who wander are lost
the old that is strong does not wither
deep roots are not reached by the frost
a fire from the ashes shall be woken
a light from the shadows shall spring
renewed shall be the blade that was broken
the crownless again shall be king

I believe you mean the Christian hymn 'Amazing Grace' written in 1772 by John Newton.
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I ONCE WAS LOST BUT NOW AM FOUND,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
We have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.(Lead me home!)
The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine

It's been quoted many time in different contexts but I think the original use was in The Parable of the Prodigal (Lost) Son, spoken by Jesus, written down by Luke in 15:11-32. That prase is in verse 24, and repeated again in verse 32.
