If you can't tolerate your prenatal vitamin you should try taking flintstones chewables with iron. My GYN told me it was okay when I was pregnant.

1) The human body has a hard time using synthetic vitamins, so they are relatively pointless. You should eat well!

2) Folic acid is most important the first 6 weeks, and you can get it seperately if you are concerned you aren't getting enough in your diet

3) Iron -sigh. Iron is a very dangerous thing to take. Excess iron causes a tonne of problems. Every other time of your life if you ask your doctor about taking extra iron they will most likely recommend against it, but not when you are pregnant. You should know that only 1% of pregnant women become anemic. Anemia is easily detected through blood tests (which they will run whether you take vitamins or not). Why medicate 99 women to protect 1. And there is NO WAY you could be anemic enough to hurt the baby without being really sick yourself, you'd notice.

Try different prenatals - if you can't handle the size of the pill itself, try Rainbow Light prenatal powder which can be added to a fruit smoothie or other drink. Both the prenatal powder and the prenatal pills made by Rainbow Light are made from whole foods (not isolated vitamins) which means that they are easier to absorb and have some herbs to ease your stomach. You can find this brand at your local healthfood store.

Some prenatal vitamins can cause nausea in an already nauseous pregnant woman. If your prenatal vitamins make you sick, talk to your health care provider. He or she may be able to prescribe a different kind of prenatal vitamins (for example, chewable vitamins as opposed to those you swallow whole may be better tolerated by some women).

Your baby needs the folic acid in your prenatal vitamin! Try taking it on a full stomach, or maybe even at night when it's possible that your stomach has calmed down? That would really depend on if you have true *morning* sickness or if it's the all-day kind.

Talk to your OB about eating foods that are loaded w/ folate, iron, and calcium too.

Yes. If the prenatal vitamins you are taking now make you sick, take to your doctor and see what they recommend. You need extra folic acid and iron in your body at this time, so talk to your doctor as soon as you can and tell them exactly what's going on and go from there.

you should ask your OB GYN , he should be able to tell you exactly why your prenatal vitamins are making you sick. Could it be that it's not the vitamins but the pregnancy itself? My advice is keep taking it, actually you need them, since the baby is absorbing all yours you have to take more to replace them. You could get anemia or something else...and you don't really want to deal with something like that while you are pregnant. Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

My best friend had a real problem with her prenatal vitamins. They were making her nauseous one minute and constipated the next. Her doctor told her to stop taking them and to take two Flinstone vitamins a day instead. Sounds funny, but they contained the same amounts of nutrients that she was recommended to take and she didn't have a single sick day with them.

I would talk to your OBGYN for sure... s/he will be able to provide the best answer... but I have a strong stomach and I totally get sick when I take vitamins, especially prenatal ones. When I was taking them, it helped to eat first and *not* take them with acidic (orange juice, etc) beverages. There are some really good liquid vitamins that might be better for you, but before you *stop* taking them, talk to your OBGYN. You really need the folic acid and the iron.

:) good luck and happy holidays!

You do need to take them. Your doc can give you anti nausea meds if you cant keep them down. It should be temporary.. usually the nausea when taking the prenatal wears off after the first trimester.... if it doesnt... he can keep you on the anti nausea pills. You can try switching prenatal brands, as well.. that helped me. Also, make sure to take them with food, and a full glass of water. Ginger lollipops helped me too, they sell them at Motherhood maternity :)

Yes, you really need to. Try taking them at night, that often helps. Do they have iron in them? That's usually what causes the sickness but it is really important you have it. Ask your doctor if you can take the iron seperately every few days instead of daily if your iron level is high enough he might consider it. Try to eat iron rich foods to help boost your level that way so your tests won't show low levels and he may even let you leave out the iron altogather for a while. But it all really depends on your levels and your doctor. Good luck
