The news is highly interesting about the money minded and self-centred hypocrite Salman Rushdie. Only now the so called absolute freedom lovers in UK who rejoiced when Rushdie’s concoction Satanic Verses was published, realise the real colour of Rushdie. They out of ill-will, unreasonably, prejudicially supported him because he attacked Islam the culture to which Rushdie’s parents belonged to, but now they hate him because the same Rushdie has started criticising the respected British tradition of monarchy as stupid and archaic. Rushdie’s bodyguard Ron Evans has written a book( Title On Her Majesty’s Sevice) that Rushdie says that it contains derogatory terms, it defames people, it is full of filth and lies and fiction. Why not salman Rushdie accept Ron Evans book under the banner of freedom of speech, why should he hate the book and the author? There is a strong smell of hypocrisy in what Rusgdie says.

What's the alternative? A choice between two probably corrupt, definitely power-crazy, individuals to lead a country. The current American version of this 'ideal' doesn't even appear to have much of a brain. He can't seem to open his mouth without making some ghastly faux pas and has absoloutely no concept of the need to start doing something about global warming and to start doing it NOW. Why would he when that would directly impact on his personal income from oil?

Give me our fabulous traditions, which have been honed for more than a thousand years into a system that works very well, and our monarchy especially our wonderful Queen every day. People who have never known what it is to have such a long history and heritage to belong to will never understand what our Queen means to her people.

The only difference between monarchy and democracy is that the ruling class of the monarchy has been raised to know that their place is to rule, and to believe in this rulership as a point of pride and honor that they must fulfill to the best of their abilities for the love of their country and people. Your country still has a ruling class, only its ruling class is governed by businesses, and makes choices not based on any tradition or protection of its people, but in order to make more money and ensure further power to be gained by the rulers. I find it amusing that the people most likely to complain about the insufficiencies of monarchy are those who have never been ruled by its system. When are you going to get rid of your corrupt elections and politicians bought by oil companies?

The Constitutional Monarchy that we have is preferable to its replacement. If we were to be a republic then we would probably need a President as well as a Prime Minister to undertake civic functions. This would be similar to the French with Mitterrand and I for one do not want to go down that road. We would still have the expense but not the tourist draw of the royal family.

Monarchy is part of British history and heritage. Amongst all the monarchies in the world, British Monarchy is the most popular one. In what way the Royals are hurting you? Or, are you jealous? If you are British, thank your stars that you have the Royalty, which gives you an identity, because Britain minus the Royalty, you are left with lousy politicians like your present PM Blair and labour unions, who have ruined the British industry to the extent that non-British companies have to take over famous industries like Rover, Leyland... the list can go on!

You're archaic and irrelevant NOW so get lost.

Not very polite is it? And you don't even do half as much charity work the 80+ year old Queen does. So when you have walked a mile in her shoes, then you might have earned the right to say something. As it is you'd do better to bite your tongue, move away from the computer and start doing some good for other people instead of bit_ching about an institution that has found favour with a nation for hundreds of years.

Merry Christmas.

I totally disagree with you. Monarchy has been great. Up to the 13th century. It's totally irrelevant and outdated now, and why should I respect a family which I don't know, they are way richer than anyone without struggling like the rest of us, and why should I love the Queen?
We are in the 21st century, yet some things are still 12th.

I ask myself that question almost every day. Sometimes I think it's nice to live in a modern, fair democracy, than I remember that our head of state is heriditary not elected and England is one of the most class-ridden societies in the world and it like being in the 15th century again. The time will come, don't worry, Old Bet will pop her clogs, no one will want Charles as king, he wont abdicate in favour of William and the whole thing will fall apart. You can see it a mile off.

As usual everyone else (well most people) responds with abuse when someone dares question monarchy. Is it because you realise we have a point that you over-react so badly? The man has an opinion, dum-de-dum. As usual, I haven't given you thumbs down for expressing your pro-monarchy opinion, but anyone anti gets shouted down. Typical.

I am British. I quite like the monarchy. If it wasn't for them, we would still be living under an Oliver Cromwell type president. The Queen has a lot more power then she uses. For instance, she could sentence someone to death if she wanted to. She could sack parliament.

Will somebody give the man his 65p back?

They provide a great foil for the British public. They are prepared to dress in fancy dress at the drop of a hat and ride around for hours in horse drawn carriages without any springs or heating- and all that without complaining!

They are the best road show in town!
