It probably is just irritation from all the rubbing and friction of going in and out. If you use scented tampons, that might have something to do with it. Also, take size of the tampon into consideration.

It can be more comfotable when your flow is heavier (at the start of ur cycle) because there is more blood which equals more lubrication, in a way. You should determine which size tampon you need to be using by how much blood is flowing, and always use the smallest size possible. Tampons are not for everyone, and I do not think it is normal for them to cause pain as you've described. Some brands work better for some females then others. Experiment, and if worse comes to worse, switch to pads.

They make tampons by tampax that come in 3 different size for heavy, medium and light days-- the thickness of each varies- you may be using one size fits all - try the light days and see if it helps- if not and maybe still, see your gynecologist

Tampons usually become more uncomfortable nearing the end of your period, because your menstrual flow has slowed down and is about to end - so basically because it`s "dryer" it`s uncomfortable to put a tamp in and take it out. I usually use tampons when I first start and then as my period stops, I just use pads.

You are most likely rubed raw inside. Stop using them and go with a pad for a while and see it it stops. I fit doesn't than you need to see a doctor.

Have you changed makes of tampon? you coul dbe having an alergic reaction.
