Ipods are not actually better ... it just became a huge craze and eveyone had to have one.. theyre really not that good .. they dont last long .. theyre built to last only about a year ... then the battery dies screen gets messed up etc..
i told all my friends not to buy ipods .. most didnt listen but a few months after they had it they all said i was right
so ... if u want an mp3 player that looks nice and works well for a few months ... get an ipod .. if you want an mp3 player that will last a few years ... look into another brand
i have a sony nw-a1000 (6GB) ... its very reliable and ive had no problems with it
and if you dont believe me .. just go throw some of the questions in this section many start with " help my ipods broken"

Updated: For a 13 year old, iPod is the best way to go because this will enforce your child to buy and download mp3's legally. You don't want the RIAA to send you to jail or get a stiff fine, do you?
Ipods are mp3 players and play mp3's. Your question does not make sense. But, I am assuming you are asking "why ipods over other mp3 players?".
There are many reasons why people prefer iPods over other brands.
1) Apple has done some great research and design on the user interface. The control is simple, yet not clunky like other competitors.
2) Their overall design is sexy and trendy. Most mp3 players are boxey and ugly.
3) Their iTunes program makes it very easy to download and install music on your iPod. Other mp3 players force people to download music illegally.
4) They have iPods for all purposes: big and small. The bigger ones would be to travel or for the car. The smaller ones are great for walkers, runners, bikers.
5) Great variety of purpose - video and music.
Why choose other mp3's?
It boils down to cost and storage. iPods cost significantly more than competitors and you don't get as much storage capacity for the money. If you know where to shop, you can save anywhere from $50-$100 off iPods, which means this point is moot.

If you basing the decision on quality an iPod has a great quality if that's all you plan to use it for is music. Microsoft has just recently released their player, I actually think It's better than the iPod it has better features than the regular player. But to tell the truth it all depends on how much memory one device holds. If it holds 60 GB, I honestly feel that I don't need that much. For me 4GBs is good. But if you want to keep money and buy a nice player I advise cnet.com to help you out.

Ipods are heaps better i think. not only can you store pictures and play videos and stuff on them they are just so much easier to use and instead of having to flick through till you find the song you can just go straight to the songlist thingo. i also think there much better in looks.
