u can when booting if u have avast.. download avast which is free for home users from avast.com and schedule one boot time scan

first you motherboard must support the flash disk to booting .then you can go in BIOS to set the booting option to let first boot is flash. the do a bootable flash disk get in a virus scan program in it .then connet it in you computer it will boot from you flash disk. then you can use what in you flash disk's virus scan program to scan the virus. or you can boot from cd/dvd to get in a light disk which have virus scan program to scan virus.

DONT download anything else but AVG-Anti-spyware

it works the best and it will help you from getting a virus in the future.

you need a bootable virus program cd. norton does this i believe. why won't a virus scan within your OS work?
