3 originally, then expanded it to 9.
Episode 3-5 were the originals, and the rest were added on later.
There are 3 more after Jedi but Lucas may not live long enough to get them made.

Yes. At one time he was planning on making 3 trilogies. The third series would take place after the Return of the Jedi. He has been guarded about the plot, but it would be many years in the future and have new characters. Currently he has no plans to do this. He is planning TV adventures that will deal with the years between Episode 3 and episode 4.
