Are you pregnant, on birth control, smoking? Any of these things could decrease your milk supply.

My guess is that your hormones are changing, and the spotting is nothing to be concerned about. When nursing, you can have months where you spot a little, or don't bleed at all, or sometimes have a full period, and the next month, no period. This is typical with nursing moms.
You may need to increase your milk supply to avoid feeding formula to your little one. Drink Mother's Milk Tea, drink plenty of water, reduce your sugar intake, and increase your fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet with adequate water and Mother's Milk Tea will help to increase your milk supply, and let baby suckle at the breast as much as he wants. You may find yourself sitting on the couch nursing all day long (or it may feel like that), but if this happens, your milk supply should adjust in 24 hours, and you should have adequate milk for your son shortly. If your son cries after nursing, try to put him back on the breast, and if he is happy to just suckle, then keep him there as long as possible (you can switch from breast to breast every 10 minutes so that he evenly stimulates milk production in each breast).
Hope this helps.

I've been getting periods since month one with both of my children!! And at every "period" (a lot nicer and shorter than those I have when not breastfeeding) my milk supply decreases till a few days after I have stopped bleeding! Just try to nurse more often. If that doesn't work, contact a lactation consultant or La Leche League before a doctor. A doctor might encourage you to stop breastfeeding.

No this is normal. See im a woman with a child as well i couldnt breast feed i tried it it didnt work but i heard that if you DO breastfeed it could slow down your periods or stop them for a while. and if youre out of milk on one side try the other ...If he wont take to the other boob try holding him like you did when you feed him off the one he just drank out of and and hold him to the other boob (kinda like youd hold a football) and maybe he is crying when your out of milk beucase he is going througha growth spurt and needs MORE milk than normal. OR the baby could be gassy from it. Try getting some Mylicon (sp?) its dye free and it works. Or Murphys pills (they stop sleeplessness and will help when the child starts to teeth) and they disolve in the childs mouth so no need to cut them. okay im done XD hope i could help

At five months your baby probably just needs a little something extra than breast milk. Around this time most babies should be having a little juice and cereal along with breast feeding. I breast fed my first for a year and around the same time as yours she just needed at little. But I wouldn't stop breast feeding. Keep it up as long as you can. If you are really concerned you could ask your doctor. Hope all goes well.

I wouldn't worry. A baby's needs change as they get bigger and they need more milk to fill them up.

Maybe it is time to add some cereal. It sounds like he is not getting satisfied.
