Buy the laptop with the upgrades already installed. Many laptops are damaged by people trying to perform basic upgrades. I've been building desktop PC's for almost 20 years, but I still won't open my laptop's case.

Since each laptop has unique chassis and sometimes special hardware to accomodate the chassis, upgrading is not as easy as a standard PC.
In a laptop, you can upgrade the RAM, hard drive and CD drives. You cannot upgrade the motherboard, sound card, video card, cpu and laptop screen.
You will pretty much get what you pay for and have limited upgrade options. Make sure you get the video card that you want.

i worked at a computer store for ten years. my experience is that laptops are not very upgradable at all. you can upgrade the ram and hard drive easily except that will only mean more storage capacity and a slight speed boost. there are very few notebooks on which you can upgrade the processor and even then it would need to be done by a professional. it is pretty much impossible to upgrade the graphics card on a notebook.

With a laptop you can upgrade the memory and the hard drives, but everything else is basically on the main board.

Not really. Some parts (such as AMD Athlon 64X2 processors) are for desktops only. But you can upgrade the RAM, Video card, and processor (as long as it's for a laptop, like the AMD Turion 64X2 processor).

No, not nearly as much physical space as in a tower. However, if you have a slot then ok for memory, card, etc. Upgrading these days is probably as expensive as buying new computer tho.

it is possible
but not easy as a pc, if you know what youre doing then it might be ok
the only thing you cant upgrade is the processor, or its really expensive to do so.

It is a little trickier and can damage your laptop. Best to find someone inexpensive to do it for ya. :)
