OK, ive been wanting to build a new computer for myself for a while, and i cant decide on which to chose: a Pentium 4 2.8ghz 521(single core) w/ 1gb ddr2 or a Pentium D 2.66ghz 805(dual core) w/ 512mb ddr2. They would both cost the same (the p4 would come out of this system, replaced with a $50 cpu, and 1gb of ram costs $100. the pd costs $100 and $50 for the 512mb ram) and there are minor drawbacks to each. Which would you chose?

Believe it or not after the system is built I can still save more money and get more ram if needed.... plus I refuse to get vista right away, im gonna wait at least a year. If windows was perfect microsoft wouldnt be trying to sell me $300 crap (ie: vista)

The entire reason i wanted a new system was for graphic and processor-heavy applications, my dell could hardly handle world of warcraft. graphics arent an issue here, got that covered with a x1600xt

I, myself, have a PD 805 D using 512 PC400 ram and it's a sweet machine. I recommend you spend a little extra on a upscale video card (makes a hell of difference). Also, be sure and set up the Hyperthreading in the BIOS.

Most of the software avail today will run using either processors, so that is not such a critical issue.
I would tend to get more memory as all the new software likes to use more and more memory, and if you decide to ever go to Windows Vista, its minimum need is 1GB of RAM.
You need to look at what you are running now, what are the memory and processor needs, and then decide the best course of action.

First take care of your RAM. 1 G at least, 2 G if you can afford it.
The CPU upgrade will be most noticeable in gaming and other graphics intesive programs. If that is your isssue you may also look at upgrading your graphics card.

What's a processor with 128MB? It's nothing. So I would get the 1 GB of ram, but I'm not an expert.

More RAM always wins. I would prefer more RAM because processor won't be much gain but if you play CPU will run more smoothly with more RAM. So memory is my choice.

i would go with the processor for now for the simple fact that it would b easier for u later on down the road to slap a piece of memory in there, compared to shopping for a new processor.
