It was called Freshmen by the Verve Pipe....or possibly Carrying Cathy by Ben folds Five (lyrics to follow)

Lyrics for Freshmen.....
when i was young and knew everything
and she a punk who rarely ever took advice
now i'm guilt stricken,
sobbing with my head on the floor
stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice
i can't be held responsible
cause she was touching her face
i won't be held responsible
she fell in love in the first place
for the life of me i cannot remember
what made us think that we were wise and
we'd never compromise
for the life of me cannot believe
we'd ever die for these sins
we were merely freshman
my best friend took a week's
vacation to forget her
his girl took a week's worth of
valium and slept
now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his
head on the floor
think's about her now and how he never really
wept he says
we've tried to wash our hands of all of this
we never talk of our lacking relationships
and how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our
heads on the floor
we fell through the ice when we tried not to
slip, we'd say
I can't be held responsible
'Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen
We were merely freshmen

Carrying Cathy....

Her window was hung like a painting
She worried it might come to life
She stared for hours
So obsessed was I and self-absorbed that I
Didn't see that she was
Crying

There was always someone carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someone's carrying Cathy

There were times when I'd find myself saying that:
"Friends, you don't understand"
And she's different when it's just me and her, and I
Closed the door and I tried to hang on and she
Sank into the dark
I was over my head

There was always someone carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someone's carrying Cathy

We gave you everything
You could have been anything
We gave you everything
You could have done anything

But to imagine a fall
With no one at all to catch you
There'd always been someone

Then one night she climbed into the picture frame
Out in the frozen air
And out of sight

Woke up sad from this dream I've been having
The last couple nights or so
With her father and brothers we're all at the funeral
Carrying a box through the rain
Then somebody says that it's always been this way

Always someone's carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always someone's carrying Cathy

Carrying Cathy- Ben Folds Five.
Her window was hung like a painting, she worried it might come to life. She stared for hours. So obsessed was I and self-absorbed that I didn't see that she was crying. There was always someone carrying, there was always someone carrying, always someone's carrying Cathy.
There were times when I'd find myself saying to friends, "You don't understand," and "she's different when it's just me and her," and I closed the door and I tried to hang on and she sank into the dark. I was over my head. There was always someone carrying, there was always someone carrying, always someone's carrying Cathy.
We gave you everything. You could have been anything. We gave you everything. You could have done anything, but to imagine a fall with no one at all to catch you. There'd always been someone.
Then one night she climbed into the picture frame out in the frozen air and out of sight.
Woke up sad from this dream I've been having the last couple nights or so. With her father and brothers we're all at the funeral carrying a box through the rain then somebody says, "It's always been this way."
Always someone's carrying there was always someone carrying, always someone carrying Cathy.
