a bandh in India is not voluntarily done but by the force used by the goons of the political parties. but it can be peaceful if it is sponsored by the governments in power.the bandh in kolkatta when sponsored by the left front govt will be peaceful but turns violent when given by mamata benargi.

Hey
ok so here's the thing, im not sure if there is such a thing as an unjustified socio-political cause, although some might seem so to you and me. the way it works is, you find something that concerns you, you find like minded people and them you try and find ways to make your voice heard. if the majority disagrees with you and your companions then you cause comes across as unjustified and if the majority agrees with you (oh and by the way, im saying majority, but i mean the civil society, the majority doesn't really seem to have a voice) your cause and your fight is applauded.
with reference to the bandh in kolkata. the way i see it is, if there did seem any other way for people not a part of the "civil society" to make their voice heard, they would have used it....so a bandh is economically very very deterimental, and perhaps one day we will find better mechanisms to express dissent, but until we do, this one is better that many others (like burning and burying the disssenting voice for instance)

Dear,
Have you ever ever seen or heard of a New York bandh, or a Hong Kong bandh, or a London bandh??? This stupidity exists only in India. It is high time the Indian Govt bans all kinds of bandhs...

Certainly bandh is a peaceful way of showing protest, when the rules were adament and refuse to see the reason due to their own vested interests. but when unsocial elements takes advantage of it, it would be horrible. The organisers should have leadership qualities of leading the peole in a peaceful way, for which government also should cultivate the habit of respecting democratic process.

I am not aware of US, but certainly consider that shutdown is peaceful and democratic way of showing your protest. It exists in every country. The negative point is the way in which bandhs ( shutdown) are exhibited. Forced participation is not to be encouraged.
