What do they put next to a copyright sign then? The author's name, or the publisher?

When a person writes an original work, they have a copyright to it. This means that no one may copy their work without their permission. If the work gets professionaly published, the copywrite may be registered with a government body.

To publish a book or any written works you must copyright the work. Go to the site of Registry of Copyrights through the Library of Congress, look up the government site and they will show you on the web all the documents you need with thorough instructions so you will be able to understand the process. Also the author gets the copyright and the publisher just gets to publish the work and must submit the credit to the author. But the c symbol you see next to the publisher only means that it is a copyright for the author, like I said you must copyright in order for a publisher to print and publish your work.

A Copyright means that you are the original author/owner of the book you are/have writing/written.

In the US, the fact that you wrote the book gives you an automatic copyright, but registering with the copyright office gives you a proof of the copyright notice.

There are so many different types of copyright.

I'm not yet an adult nor near the teenage age, but, for my information, a copyright sign on a book means that no others authors can copy the idea. i think.
