My 4 week old baby daughter is doing really solid, harmed and formed poops. The midwife on a parent helpline suggested giving her a teaspoon of brown sugar dissolved in 30ml of cooled boiled water, before her next three bottles. How long should it take for my baby to start feeling better?

Coloxyl infant drops - relieves constipation as stated on the bottle, 10 drops for infants under 3 months. 3 times a day.

Its not harsh and is just a stool softner, not a laxative, drop it into her bottle, it will work, we are currently using them again for our daughter of 10 months and used them previously for our son.

Massage her stomach lightly in a clockwise motion around her bellybutton. This is the direction which everything inside the intestinal tract moves. Massaging in this direction will help get evrything moving along. If this doesn't work, take a q-tip and wet the end. Stick the wet end just inside of her anus, so that the q-tip part isn't showing. I know it sounds horrible, but this will trigger her reflex to bear down, and I know that when my son was constipated, I would do this one or two times and it would all come out (usually while I was standing there waiting, I didn't even have time to get a new diaper).

I usually recommend a 50/50 mixture of prune juice and water for older infants, but am not very familiar with constipated newborns on formula. My guess is baby may need a low iron formula, because the iron in the formula can be constipating. Babies are happier with softer and more frequent bowel movements. If this were my baby, I would probably try the prune juice and water just to get her going, and I would probably try a low iron formula to keep her going. I breast fed all 5 of my children, and though I provided infant day care for nearly 6 years, I didn't see constipation in any of the newborns in my care. Older babies, yes, and we did a little babyfood prunes or prune juice and that always worked.

I would also try the suggestion of triggering the reflex to "go" as suggested in the previous post. I have spoken to a mom who did this with her baby, and it worked for her.

Give her cooled boiled water in a bottle. The iron in breastmilk and formula causes her stool to become hard. give her water and she will be fine and will do it without any problem.

when my son had the problem around that age, his doctor had me give him a teaspoon of corn syrup in 2oz of water. he filled his diaper after like 20 min.
