OK I know bra's for women serve a support purpose, but the bottoms for men and women - is this just a trickle down from ancient times (when undergarments would cover the entire body for modesty and tradition), and, as time wore on, the garments (like bathing suits) got smaller, and if so will they be phased out or evolve into something else?

So our privates don't get cold, of course!
Also, they keep your real clothes from getting soiled.

Even though it's gross to think about, that area does have bacteria and such that you don't want all over your clothes. All though you may wipe the area when going to the bathroom, you can't get it all off unless you bathe. I heard on a show once that the average person has 1/4 of a peanut of feces on their underwear at the end of the day. Yuck right? Just think about all the men with their "skid marks".
So underwear protects your clothes from all that.
Also for some it's more comfortable. I don't want my lady parts rubbing on rough deniem I'd rather have soft fabrics.

It tends to help with the amount of laundry I actually have to wash. Cleaning undies, no big deal. Using jeans as undies... both "ow" and "ew"

I must tell you, I have a little boy recently potty-trained. There is nothing in the whole wide world that would make me put pants on him with no underwear until he is MUCH better at wiping.

Trickle down. You've got it. To catch that which trickles down.

Also, to keep the package in place for guys.

And, just plain old protection.

Hey, garments could always get big again.

This is all common sense.

For women, underwear serves a second, aesthetic function. Not to be crude, but for me underwear helps after urination if I'm wearing slacks. In jeans, not wearing underwear is just not comfortable for me.

So that your private parts do not get irritated by the fabric inside the garment.

Also, so that you will not be as mortified if someones catches a glimpse up your skirt or dress.
