The war did not end on April the ninth 1865, that was nothing else then the Army of Northern Virginia being surrendered. Below are the surrender dates of several Confederate armies; Johnson Army of the Tennessee was the last large Army. President Davis who was on the run and considering an insurgent war was captured on 10 May 1865. (This has been considered the official ending date). An odd fact was the last two Confederate Armies remaining in the field were both Indian troops and leaders Thomas Legions surrendered the Eastern forces on 9 May 1865 while the Western Army commanded by Stand Waite surrounded the Western forces on 23 June 1865. I hope you found this interesting if it is for school work demand they give extra credit for reporting on something they did not know!
April 9, 1865 Appomattox Courthouse; Lee and Grant
April 26, 1865 Bennett Place; Johnson and Sherman
May 9, 1865 Thomas’ Legion; Waynesville, NC
May 10, 1865 Irwinville, Georgia; Jefferson Davis was captured
June 23, 1865 Fort Towson, Oklahoma; Stand Watie surrenders
God Bless You and Our Southern People.

It was at this guy's HOUSE. It was known as Appomattox Court House. It DIDN'T END THE WAR. Man I wish people would stop spreading that lie. The war kept going. All it did was have Lee surrender and he disbanded the Northern Virgina Army. President Jefferson Davis had every intention to carry on the war. When the other Generals were informed that Lee had surrendered they started laying down their arms and surrendering out of respect for Lee. The war itself did continue on though, although it wasn't so much a war anymore as a few sparce battles. One could truly argue that the War didn't really end until the States rejoined the Union though. After all were they not still an independent group? Remember Johnson didn't just let them come back in, rather made them apply for readmission.

The village of Appomattox Court House;
The town of Appomattox it self is located three miles west of the restored village of Appomattox Court House, which is the site of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, signaling the end of the American Civil War. The site of the historic courthouse village is now preserved as Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and is administered by the National Park Service.
