I thought it was a good movie and no i dont think it potrays the mayans

In some ways yes, it did, in others, no. As with all movies, it was greatly dramatized. I wrote a long essay about this very subject on 12-15 (see link, below).
I wouldn't recommend using it as a history lesson. It's not meant to be historical. He wanted to set a movie in an often-ignored period of history. I'm glad to see attention given to that time period, which is my favorite.
