We have a fishtank with about 6 fish in it, all of different breeds but they all get along. We have one fish, i think it is a molly, and it has babies nonstop! I am sure this is the fish having babies because she is very FAT constantly and she has one baby that lived and is almost as big as her. Thats right, she had a baby fish and she protected it and didn't eat it she even chased away the other baby- hungry fish. This baby is now quite big, looks exactly like mom and hangs around mom. BUt recently she had about 40 babies and they are all swimming around the top, yet she is still fat. She doesn't try to eat them and chases the others once again with her big baby's help. Who could she be mating with? The other fish are a clownfish, a platy , and 3 neon tetras. This is odd that she also protects her babies. Why? This is all confusing to me.

she was probably pregnant when you bought her. i don't think they can cross breed. good luck with the babies! That must be pretty exciting to watch! what a great christmas gift

oh to answer your question, there are lots of species of fish that will protect their babies...it is very common among fish - live bearers or egglayers to protect their eggs and their babies.

Livebearers such as the molly only need to breed once to have multiple litters of fry, over and over again. They store the sperm from the original breeding in their bodies and remain pregnant until the sperm is used up.

Guppies are renowned for this. It's how they earned then name "millions fish".

My guess is you bought a pregnant female and she has just continued on having fry over and over. She will stop eventually though. Remember that her young, if male, will breed with her and other females. Be ready to separate out the males from the females when they are old enough to determine their sex or you're going to have a problem.

well mabey she mated with her same type breed before you got her. You cannot nesseccarily make her stop having babies. But you could give away the fish to a pet store or to friends or something. You could also put up a sign that you have free fish.

Female livebearers can store sperm in their bodies for months at a time. All it takes it 1 minute with a male and she will have 4-5 batches of fry before she needs a male again.

interesting. you're terrific suited in assuming there must be extra fry. till you have been observing the totally birthing technique, the others could have been eaten or mom remains somewhat youthful. in case you in straightforward terms have 2 fry inspect at your puppy save a field which you keep interior the tank which floats to split your fry. no could desire to purchase a clean tank till you have a surplus. Then i could pass the fry.
