It’s not normal for a hermit crab to be lethargic. If you hermit crab isn’t active, maybe you aren’t providing the proper environment for them. The following are some things you should be aware of that may affect your hermit crab’s health and activity.

1.OTHER CRABS!
Get more crabs, they love company! Try to stick to crabs of similar sizes to prevent fighting.

2.Temperature
The temperature is the biggest factor in the health and happiness of a hermit crab. The temperature in his home should be between 70 and 78 degrees. Chances are your home isn’t warm enough, especially at night.
The best bet is to use a heating lamp to warm up their space. Keep a thermometer near the sand (not close to the lamp) to measure the temperature where the hermit crab hangs out. If it’s too hot, then you might need to get a lower wattage bulb or move the lamp farther away. At night you can use a red or blue bulb so that it won’t bother their eyes.
You can also use a heating pad instead of a bulb. It goes under the tank (not inside) and warms just the sand. It should only be on half the cage, so the crab can cool itself if it wants to.
ALWAYS have a UVA/UVB light on your hermit crab during the day, in addition to the heating method you use (which could mean 2 lamps). This makes artificial sunlight, and will help your crab to live longer (up to 20 years!)

3.Humidity
The humidity in the tank should be about 50-70%. There are special “thermometers” that measure this. If the humidity is too low, spray the tank with a spray bottle (like rain) to bring up the humidity.
Hermit crabs can’t breathe in low humidity, because they don’t have lungs, they have gills. Give your hermit crabs a bath once a week by dipping them quickly in luke warm water. They’ll love it!

4.Size of the cage
Don’t ever use those stupid plastic hermit crab kits! A single hermit crab needs at least a 10 gallon tank. The more crabs you have, the more room they need. If there is not enough room, they will kill each other, become depressed, and die way too young.

5.Toys
Maybe your hermit crab is bored. Crabs love toys!
Put lots of sand at the bottom of the tank. They love to dig and bury themselves. Give them a hut to hide in. Give them LOTS of stuff to climb, because the LOVE climbing. Driftwood is great for this. Plastic plants are also fun. You can also put wire mesh (chicken wire) against the wall and on the top, and the crabs will climb up it and hang upside down from the roof.
Don’t forget to provide other shells for them to try on when they get bigger. Its fin to watch them switching their shells. (Stay away from painted ones)

6.Diet
Diet is a HUGE factor in health and activeness. Most people just feed their hermit crabs pellets or powder, but this doesn’t provide the hermit crab with everything they need. They are scavengers and love to find new things to eat.
Food they can eat:
•Rice
•Oatmeal
•Freeze dried bloodworms and plankton
•Tropical fruit (mangos, coconuts, papaya)
•Veggies
•Well cooked meat (especially seafood)
•Nuts
•Applesauce
•Raisins
•Peanut butter
•Honey
•Cooked Egg

Keep in mind that hermit crabs are most active during the evening, night, and early morning, and tend to sleep most of the day.

imo u could desire to get ur hermit crab first and after approximately 3 days of seein the way it acts, then u furnish it a attractiveness that suits his/hers character. I easily have 2 of them and one is termed Everest after the Mountain cuz he likes to climb to the utmost peek of the great log I easily have of their habitat. The others call is Waldo named after "Wheres Waldo" character lol cuz he consistently hides and regularly can b got here upon burrowed below what ever i put in their place. presently its hay. I dont stick to regulations. I pimp their place out with what i come across around at residing house (logs, plastics and so on.) If i did stick to regulations then it may value $ and that i've got over 30 pets that selection from the worry-unfastened chickens to the unique tortises which btw grrrr escaped as quickly as back. Ugh that dam Houdini i shall hunt him down tom. early mornin :D If u dont prefer to attend to c their character u could finally end up with a attractiveness thats an entire opposite of it and thats no exciting :( call concepts in any case: Herbie, Gary, Bella, Tom Tom, Bailey, Riley, Chomper (when you consider that they have one great mandible claw) get excitement from something of ur nite/day :)

just because they dont walk around and they close their shells does not mean that they re asleep. tht's why they're called hermit crabs, they hide inside their shell all the time.

That is what they do. They are nocturnal scavengers. They sleep all day and get up to eat at night.
