In addition to Monic's answer, they are used to keep their shooting arm warm. In some cases they are for circulation (which would also keep the arm warm). They are made out of compression material in cases like Allen Iverson.

For the most part the sleeves that these athletes wear on their arm is to keep the circulation going through out the game because of the material it is made of. It also helps keep their strong arm warm so it doesn't get tight or sore like your legs do once you stop playing for a period of time.

first of all, the "sleeve" is mainly for support... i think, that like the knee pad, it is used as a compressor so that joints may not experience too much stress... other players, like iverson, may only use it for the looks or it has become his habit... it's just a matter of personal preference or functionality

iverson has some tatoos on his arms that are offending so he must wear his sleeve other just where it to look cool or to keep their are warm

well some of them wear it for a fasion statement although some like iverson wear it for different reasons. iverson has some naughty tatoos of girls on his arm an has to cover them.
