Well, any birth control tablet will affect your health in some way because they're hormones. It can be anything from weight gain to lack of sex drive to nausea.
There are a myriad of methods. My personal choice has been Depo-Provera ("The Shot") because it's quick, and I only have to remember once every 3 mos. There's also the Ortho-Evra patch, and a number of different types of pill.
Condoms are also good, but their rate of pregnancy prevention is only ~up to~ 98%. There's a 10-18% accidental pregnancy rate with them, compared to 0.1% with Depo and 2-8% with the pill.
Which one is best for you? Well, that's something you need to talk about with your doctor, and see if there are any pros or cons to certain methods that would make them better for you to use.

There is only ONE birth control method that is 100% effective and that is NOT having sex at all. There are condoms and birth control pills and iuds, and morning after pills, and diaphrams, and spermacides but NONE of them are 100% effective, even if you choose to use ALL of them. BTW ALL of these methods affect health in some way. Some women/men are allergic to the materlial that condoms are made from. If you get pregnant with an IUD inserted it can cause miscarriage and infections that may require a hysterectomy. Birth control pills can cause high blood pressure/stroke/heart attack in some women, spermacides/diaphrams can cause yeast infections...

All of the effective oral birth control methods include types of synthetic hormones, progestin and estrogen.
I don't know which health effects you're concerned about, but they are well-known to regulate cycles and reduce the bloating and bleeding during cycles as well.
If you want to avoid pregnancy without putting synthetic elements in your body, use a condom or diaphragm.

Birth control pills that you get from your doctor are the best so you don't have to worry about getting pregnant. Condoms are also okay.

the best option would be go to your gynaec have a thourough check up and get your prescription. which is the best way. dont go for over the counter ones. there are lot of new generation pills available which could suit you. but your doctor will be the best judge.
otherwise stick to condoms.

I can only give you my experience. I got pregnant on the orthoevra patch. my doctor told me that the pill is very similiar and I would likely get pregnant on the pill also. so I am on the depo shot.
I would ask your Mom what she used, your genetic makeup is similiar. (however my mom successfuly used the pill )
