I own a Volkswagon Passat with all-wheel dirve and was told that using chains for snow driving is not appropriate and in fact would be bad for the car. Is this true? Or, if not, are there other precautions that must be taken when using chains on a vehicle with all wheel drive? Thank you

You must use zero clearance snow chains or cables. Since your vehicle is AWD you must install tire chains on all four wheels.

Also, tire chains are not designed for high speeds, only use tire chains when necessary. Check with your local bylaws for when, where and types of chains allowed.

Whoever told you that is an idiot.

ANYTHING that enhances traction on snow is GOOD for the car.

With AWD, you should get 2 sets of snow chains (all four wheels).

you will need them on all 4 tires (not just 2), so that might become a pain. do not drive fast while using chains. im sure there is a disclaimer on the chains box but i wouldnt go over 30mph with chains on. garyO gets a thumbs down for giving the people above him a thumbs down,,,actually he gets a thumbs down for saying you can put them on only one axle. there is something in your "transfer case" called something like a vivicous coupler. i beleive it acts something like positrac and you will burn out the clutches in it if you only put chains on one axle or ever run different tire sizes on the front or back.

If you have fowl weather tires you should not need snow chains, however in icy conditions they will give you more control. I would check your owners manual or check with VW technical service if there would be a problem or what they would recommend. I would think as long as you had them on one axle and drove accordingly, i.e slowly you would be OK. then removing when no longer necessary.

Don't go with chains. If you insist on them though, check your state laws first, a lot of states outlaw them because they tear up the roads.

Hi, with AWD you should never need chains.

I've never driven 4wd's and have Always gotten around.
