Finding a purpose in life, such as the "predetermined job" you are describing is often attributed to and with religion. Many religious faiths encourage the belief that individuals are given life for specific reasons, not necessarily made clear to them at all times. Also, many faiths encourage that there is a "life after death", and that one's actions in life will determine how, where, and in what state of mental satisfaction one will spend the eternity after death.
Other people believe that there is no ordained fate or purpose to an individuals life, or that the purpose of life is a species' purpose--to further the species. Much of it depends on how you view faith or lack thereof. Believing that there is a meaning to life has been critisized as being a comfort blanket--something that assures people they are not useless, that they matter, that their lives are important.
You will get different answers depending on who you ask. There is no right or wrong answer, merely opinions backed with varying degrees of merit and will.

Purpose of life??? Crazy stuff... Well i think that the purpose of life is to find its purpose. The basic thing in finding the purpose of life is to interconnect everything. Try to find the equilibrium that lies in nature and apply it to your life.
By interconnection i mean try to harmonize everything. That thing might look impossible but once u find the realtionship between u and someone miles away from u or find the effect of ur actions in another person's life, u have so many things to interconnect until u find the absolute formula that governs every single thing, then only u'll finfd the purpose of life!!!!

Yes, there is a purpose for your life, but it is different for every person. From a Christian perspective, the purpose of life is to have a relationship with God. Regardless, (whether you are Christian or not) everyone has unique abilities that are natural for them. The problem is that people get trapped doing things that don't allow them to express what their true abilities are. What you need to do is what you LOVE to do. There is a quote that I like that says "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that...Because, what the world needs it people who have come alive."

Everyone has a purpose in life. For me, I truly believe it is to raise my son. God has had plans for you before you were even a thought in your parent's minds. He has a plan and a purpose for everyone. I think He has shown me my purpose because I had a rather complicated and near-deadly childbirth because of severe hemorrhage in my uterus, I nearly died, but I believe the reason that I am still here is to be a good mother to my son. Someday you will know why you are here.

The purpose of life is to experience it for the evolution of your eternal soul. In the eternity of our spiritual lives, this physical life is merely a blip in time. As are all of the other lives we have lived and will live.

If you look at it from a scientific point of view, your purpose is to keep your species alive.
If you look at it from a religious point of view, your purpose is to live and be happy.
If you look at it from a different point of view, you create your own purpose.
