One of the best authors in suspense stories is Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), for example, try reading each of the following and you'd appreciate its effects and horror:

1. A Tell-Tale Heart
2. The Purloined Letter
3. The Fall of the House of Usher
4. The Gold-Bug
5. The Murders in the Rue Morgue
6. The Pit and the Pendulum
7. The Premature Burial
8. The Black Cat
9. Loss of Breath
10. The Power of Words, etc.

Poe's a master of his narrative style with great phrases, we should never doubt his intelligence since he was admitted to study at West Point, one of the US prestigious military academies but later he resigned to roam the world by writing.
