I believe that a lot of the reason has to do with financial and economic reasons. It literally costs nothing. In places like Mexico, some kids make a ball out of wadded up paper and garbage. they can't even afford a ball. It's a glamorous game. Graceful. Not like American football.........a lot of burly muscle head brutes

Soccer has only recently been added as a high school sport in most of the United States. It's a matter of numbers. As more and more people start playing, more and more people will take an interest.
The NFL and many old school aulmni of the colleges are doing everything they can to stop soccer from becoming more popular than football. Of course, for sheer energy and excitement, soccer has football beat. Competition is the name of the game.
As more and more soccer players and soccer fans graduate from college, the emphasis will start to change. It has already begun.
In the US, the salaries offered in professional baseball, basketball, and football are typically much higher than for soccer, so many talented atheletes have been drawn into these sports rather than soccer. It's not that way in the rest of the world.
Traditions take a while to change. It'll happen,

Because Americans only like sports that they are good at. Notice that USA are the only country in the world to play American Football, well they like that because they like to think they are the best at it. Lacross is another one. Also Americans suck at soccer and they dont have the attention spand to be able to watch a full 90 minute soccer game.

They like high scoring sports. I know alot of Americans that do watch "soccer" that ...if its not a high scoring game..they assume it was a boring game without caring about the quality of play or anything other than how many goals went in. They like to constantly have something to cheer about with football if you dont appreciate the skills and the quality of play alot of time can go on between goals which can bore you if u arent into all aspects of the game

For one, there isn't enough of a TV audience for it. Therefore it won't get past sponsors as a money maker.
Two, it's continuous. Even if there was an audience for it, the sponsors would not get the TV air time they'd like.
Three, prominent current players need to promote it and/or retired players need to be in the TV booth. It needs to have a face that people can identify with. The women made some inroads on that level with Mia Hamm and the womens team being in the public eye. I don't know the name of one person on the mens team.

I'm an American who watches soccer on some days like it's my job, cheering on the D.C. United (my fave American team) and I get the premium sports channels so I get to see my other teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, Werder Bremen, Arsenal FC, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid. It all depends on whether or not people get the channels and if it's advertised properly, but believe me, there are tons of Americans who love soccer at least as much as they like football. At least people in Michigan and Washington D.C. do. ^_^

18.3 million in 2004.
This is the number of people in the US who played soccer in that year. No new stats have been compiled, to my knowledge. It would be fair to say that it is popular.
Behind basketball it is the 2nd most participated sport in the US.
