Because then he would look like Tom Hanks in "Cast Away" after four years and that just is not very attractive - no matter how loud you can yell "Ahhhh-oohhhh-ahhhhhhh!" (Or however that noise goes).

actually, in the first book, one of the things he finds is a mirror and a razor and a picture book that makes him realize that he is not a gorillla, but a man. the book shows a picture of a man shaving, so he figures it out.
