It seems to be a historical fact going back ages. What purpose does it serve?

firstly curiosity or peer pressure
then probably
to escape reality
then addiction(and humans are naturally self destructive)

If your talking historically then most cultures did it at one point or another as part of religious ceremonies (ie: the native americans with peote) Some still do (rastafairianism - thats a complete guess at the spelling - weed, block, marajuanna). I used to as a way to free my mind when paintig but soon realised that I did very little painting and a great dealing of staring at a white canvass. these day if I do take drugs - alcohol, whatever - I do so only to reach a relaxed state of mind where thoughts flow freely before being hindered by them. On the whole I have noticed that creative juices seem to dry up under the influence.
Maybe its not the right type of drugs?
If you're a grown adult and want to experiment with drug taking for whatever means then I say go ahead - just be really damn carefull!

This has to do with the positve effects, these can have, under circumstances, on one's life quality. Obviously there are side-effects, as there are with any kind of school medicine or other herbal remedies too. One has to weigh the for's and the don't's for him/herself.

Basically you could say that they cause or correct a chemical (dopamine and other hormones)inbalance in one's brain. That is why these drugs are good for some(those with an (natural)inbalance)but bad for others(those without an inbalance)!

Of course, to get back to your question, I think alot of people start taking mind-altering substances, like cannabis, cocaine, crack, heroin etc., purely ignorantly and because it is the "in" thing to do. It is only later, when one realizes the effect these drugs actually have, that there is a purpose to serve! For those who respond well, I believe it is good..in moderation (medicative), but for others I believe it only serves a destructive purpose.

I go to school to alter my mind. School is substance too. I love to alter my mind. Purposely enabling me to better and perfect my personal perception of reality.

Perhaps they have a low self-esteem, or are very shy and unable to communicate with others in the way they would like to. Perhaps they really do have a dull real existence and want to to have the chance to be `someone else` and enter a life style that the real them could not do.

It's part of human nature - we all do it. Some take drugs, which is the obvious thing, but caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and sugar all alter our brain's chemistry in varying degrees.

Numbing pain--anxiety, grief, anger, fear, stress. It's a substitute for actually dealing with problems when someone feels overwhelmed.

Some people also use it to get other's attention if they don't feel cared for. For instance: a high school student intentionally comes home high from pot to "shock" their parents into paying attention to them when other tactics haven't worked.

Definitely, as you noticed, a worldwide, ages-wide phenomenon. I'd some it up as people just want to be happy! We use what we think will get us happy.

I did it to block out the pain of my everyday hurts in life..to block the pain of depression and of losing my son..as long as I was high..I didn't care if my best friend died..nothing bothered me..I was numb.. I blocked the pain of abuse..drugs kept me from facing "life" and it's problems..Unfortunately they were still there when I came down but fro a while I didn't face them.

some are legally prescribed by Dr,s to help people cope with life. Some are needed by some people very much. The illegal drugs (even prescribed drugs can be abused!) are used by the weak to ruin their lives and not only their own, but also the lives of their loved ones! They use these hard drugs to get a high that they want to achieve to make them feel good for a short time and is ruining their lives and health!
