How about a library card? It's simple, it's a gift that keeps on giving, it'll help with her education, and sometimes they have a story hour or arts and crafts (which get's the 5 year old out of mom and dad's hair for a while).

I don't think there is a "best gift" for any *group* of people. Everyone is different...But as a librarian, I have to concur with the person that said "books." Reading books to little kids is really beneficial for their minds.
