They're not very close. You want a source? Here's a source: The fact that Iran isn't trying to build WMDs, is that good enough?
I remember 2 years ago when the "Iran is building nukes" story first came up. Neo-conservative paranoia was at it's peak (kind of like when they claimed that Saddam had nukes) and everyone was talking about how Iran would have nukes within a year. Well, it's almost 3 years later and they still haven't done it. The chances are they aren't even trying. It doesn't take more than 2-3 years to build some kind of nuclear weapon, I can tell you that much.

Who knows-look at the "intelligence" we got from Iraq. It seems likely the administration will say we're in grave danger since we get along with Iran. Bush just signed an agreement NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- The United States will send nuclear fuel and expertise to India under the terms of a pact reached on the last day of President Bush's visit to New Delhi.
In return, India pledged to open up its 14 civilian nuclear reactors to international inspectors and keep power generation separate from its military program.
But India -- which has developed nuclear weapons -- will keep eight sites for secret military purposes under the terms of the deal, reached after intense negotiation.
India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty designed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons to non-nuclear nations,

Do any of you know just how many thousands of centrifuges cascading it takes to produce weapons grade u-235? The governments saying the Iranians have uranium hexafluoride and are therefore developing weapons is like saying they have a bicycle pump, therefore they have a car. All the powers that be are doing is pushing the same line of BS they used to justify the debacle in Iraq. Enriching Uranium and making weapons grade uranium are two entirely different things.

Sorry, I have no source but they aren't far away if they are already enriching uranium.
If plutonium is found in Iran, then it can be concluded that they have a nuclear weapons program. Plutonium enrichment is far better than enriched Uranium, and enriched Plutonium has only one known use...as a weapon.
As it stands now, Iran is enriching Uranium in large scale in centrifuges. Enriched Uranium can be used as energy or as a weapon.

The real answer is, "No one knows!" The Iranians probably don't know. The Russians are probably in the best position to determine that but they aren't going to talk. The United States has let it's foreign intelligence break down. It isn't nearly as effective as it once was. Especially when you figure the technology that we have at our disposal. Even the nuclear test in North Korea caught us completely off guard.

My guess is that they've had one for about 10 years, but unlike Korea haven't tried to test anything in public yet.
The US equipped and trained the Iranian military for many years after WW II, Korea, and Vietnam.

It's a long story. Iran needs a year or two. Log on to Cnn.com or bbcnews.co.uk. BBC is very factual and reliable. it's the headlines now. You might want to see.
