Here are a few things to follow:
1. Know your story. Make sure you firmly establish what you are going to use as the basis of your lie. Make sure it is easy to remember and do not waver in your story. Inconsistancies will give you away.
2. It's all about the details. A person who is a bad liar is vague. Add some details to your story to add color and make it more believable.
Things to avoid:
Do not go overboard. Although embellishing and adding details to a story can make it more believable, it can get messy, and you can give yourself away. Details are great, but don't give too many that you will not remember your story.

If the person knows you well you'll probably get caught. In your mind you ethically know you did something wrong and it will play out in your body language and thinking when confronted by it. I can almost always tell someone I know is lying. Different people display different patterns but, there are just some things that are definitely not suttle about lying that people will pick up if it bothers the liar enough.
I've had people look me straight in the eye all that BS I just see through it. You have to question motives, circumstance, voice, rate of speaking, face, body, conversation time, subject, detail, emotions. People have to work harder at thinking about a lie than the truth it shows. If I assume someone is a liar I interrogate them and if they can't handle my strategies than I know. I just deal with a lot of liars I guess.
Even if someone is lying you need to know what and why. The reason and the motive play a big part. If you live a legit life you shouldn't have to lie to anybody. Even so you should be too full of guilt because lying only adds to what you are lying about.

A skilled, trained observer (both qualifications are necessary) can spot a lie with fairly high accuracy, but most people are either unskilled, untrained, or both.
However, if you can train people to detect lies you can also train them to avoid detection - by avoiding the cues that enable their detection. Some tricks seem obvious: practice lying, practice detecting lies, minimize self-betraying expression, eye & body movements. Apparently people who live in prison tend to be very good at detecting lies; you might ask them about it (but take their advice with a grain of salt!)
I feel uneasy about providing too much information on this subject, but I'm sure the information is out there. I've appended a link to an interesting article on the subject.

Why would you want to lie because in the end you have to keep on backing up the lie you said and in the end you will get caught, and you have to remember the lie that you said but you don't have to remember the truth.
