When I first study cell, I studied about cells in general. Since our human body is eukaryotic cells and there are many compartments and organelles. I would urge that you understand all these first.

Learn more about the cell in general before going to specific cells because normally all cells have these organelles and compartments. When you understand all their charactertisics and usage, then you begin to learn more about different cell types. Why would a muscle cell be in this shape having more mitochondria than usual. Most things would make sense after you have understood them.

In my opinion, Biology is more about understanding than memorizing. Many people have told me before I take this subject that memory plays the key role. I disagree with them because it is the understanding of each part and then linking them up together that makes you learn Biology. No doubt the names and various characterisitics require good memory but I would say that linking all of them up is the true Biology. The true study of life.

Learning the parts and functions is a good start. Just real general.
Then get into more detail, like how the cell knows what processes to do, how dna is made.
mitosis, meiosis
Transcription, translation, etc

A great place to start is wikipedia, or if you have a bio book, read that.
Wikipedia is an awesome site because it's written by regular people. It's simple, nothing to complex. Great for people like you wanting to learn something new!
Good luck!

Get a microscope and use it to look at anything that may contain cells. This is how scientific pioneers began, and it's a great way to start. Nothing beats first hand experience!
