It's a shortcut for a username. If you add that in your profile, it will display to users as their name. So when I read the profile, it will have my screenname there, you would see yours etc.

if you put %n in your profile or away message, it will read as the person's screename who is looking at it. For example say you put "Hi %n!" in your profile. Somebody with the screenname Diva16 will see "Hi Diva16!" when they look at your profile.

it will read whoever's screename is reading whatever you wrote.
%d means today's date I believe...
