On those rare occasions that I go to nightclubs I just stand around with a drink in my hand. It would be so much easier to connect to women if I could ask them to dance. The problem is that most "dance schools" don't teach practical dancing that is used in clubs. They teach obscure, archaic stuff like ballroom dancing, cha-cha, etc. Where do I learn those hip dances that are used in the real world?

I'm serious about this...

Rent or buy the movie "Hitch" with Will Smith.
Observe the simple but attractive dance he teaches to his client.
It is easy to learn and appropriate for all situations, especially nightclubs. Practice at home in front of a mirror.

Don't try to be fancy. Don't worry about how you look or you'll tense up and it will show. Relax and enjoy when you dance. Have a good time.

Now, go get the movie. Don't wait until tomorrow.

It's good that you went to cha-cha and ballroom classes. But apparently, you weren't learning the right thing in those classes. Maybe you were concentrating on patterns (underarm turn, cross body lead and what not) instead of concentrating on technique, that is, on how to move your body in a nice way.

If you notice, club dancing is not about fancy steps. There are hardly any steps to it. It is about moving your body. This is what you should have been paying more attention to in cha-cha and ballroom classes. That's what you need to learn. And it doesn't matter what type of dance classes you pick, as long as in the end of the day you learn to move your body. Besides, being 37, don't you think ballroom would be the best kind at this point?

Don't worry about it. Most guys don't know how to dance. In nightclubs with all the noise and lights you can just get out there and no one will ever notice you. I say just do it. If you are at a wedding or some other occasion just do the slow dances. left foot forward, right foot forward, right foot toward the right, left foot toward the right. Just repeat that in reverse and you have the basic square. Do it fast do it slow it's all the same or buy a tape, lol. If all else fails have a few drinks and you'll be just fine.

Honestly, I don't know how to dance either! Yeah, it can be a little embarassing at times, but that's just not my style - I'm good at other things though. It's really not a big deal and I'm sure that there are lots of other things that you are good at that others can't do. Everyone has their own talents. Perhaps, I'm not answering your question, but maybe what I want you to realize is that you don't have to ever learn if it's just not your thing. There are lots of places where you can meet people and not necessarily have to at the clubs. Plus I don't think any place teaches the type of dancing that goes on at the club. Good luck though!

Watch music videos of hip hop artists. Usually they have good moves. Watch what Timbaland does in Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous Girl" for instance. Basically you just move to the music, side to side, up and down. If that's a bit hard, just get a good mix of hip hop music (usually good popular ones can be found on Yahoo! Music) and when you're alone in your room or something, dance to the music until it feels natural. In front of a mirror might help once you feel comfortable, so you can actually see what you're doing. Even ask a trusted female friend to come get down with you. ^_~

Best tip I give to my buddies that can't dance since 10 times out of 11 I am the one dancing out there....just move around slowly, like a wiggle of the top of your body and slight gyration of the hips. Move your feet slowly...don't try to be the next Deney Terrio (Dance Fever..back in the 70's). If you hear a song you really like, just do those moves and go with the tune....incredibly you'll move better and pick things up.

It's alright if you can't dance b/c I never knew how to dance. Until I started to look at BET music videos and looked at the people dance. So when I go to the school dances I wait for everyone to start dancing and then the guys are all over me. seriously they are!So look at t.v. music videos, and movies, what ever involves dancing (club dancing)

Find a woman who doesn't know how to dance either. It can't be THAT hard. You don't have to be a perfect dancer to find someone! Lots of guys have no idea of how to dance and they still found women that they love and got married and lived happily ever after!

Dancing is simple, Billy Idol, "Dancing With Myself"
Dancing to me like shaking my soul, it really does not matter,
if other laugh, if i don't know how to dance something new.
Dancing is a primitive source of self expression, it is used
to attract the opposite sex, such as birds do.

Try adult education classes. Some offer more up to date types of dancing. Good luck.
