There is a need for thoughts and feelings - most of which are in the past. Through the inner self (intrinsic value), the person may have experience an event, during his/her upbringing, social or environment; that help associate with taking action.
When lower level of need is met, people may want to achieve higher needs (Maslow). For example; What drives someone to do bungy jumping (future - something that has not happen before or have yet to be experienced).
Most needs comes from within (intrinsic), yet sometimes people may be motivated by money, sex ...etc, may be forced to do something out of their wish, circumstances beyond their control or because they have no choice (extrinsic) - wants.
When someone is driven by intrinsic needs, chances are it is more sustainable ad stronger within that individual.

In 1943, Abraham Maslow proposed a pyrimidal scheme called the "hierarchy of needs." When I studied the subject, around 1983, this scheme was still referenced in standard texts.
Maslow's hierarchy includes five levels:
5. Self-actualization (top of pyramid)
4. Esteem
3. Love-belonging
2. Safety
1. Physiological (bottom of pyramid - most basic needs).
One could propose all sorts of alternate schemes, but Maslow's has the advantages of being based on extensive study, being widely known, and being fairly straightforward.

Beyond the obvious biological needs, stands status. Status equates to assurance of well being within a group, and preferred ranking of the group's resources.

It is all inextricably bound up with sex in some way, and a desire for approval from God for us religious folks.
