Im 19 (not a minor), in NY state, and my mom is always opening up my mail (we dont even have the same last names), not matter what, and its usually stuff pretaining to my union, which is for MY eyes only. She says she does it "because shes my mother", but for mail, thats a tired excuse. She does it so much, i would consider taking legal action (were kinda loaded), just to scare her or something.
AND NO, I CANT MOVE OUT.

Technicaly, you are correct, but, since it's your mother, the PO will not take it seriously. I would recommend that you get a PO box in your name only & have your mail transferred there. I did that when I got divorced & I worked for the PO for almost 20 yrs.

Yes, it probably is against the law. Why are you still living there with so little respect? I left my parents house when I was 18, because there was no respect in that house.
You don't have to get your own Post Office Box (although that would work), but you can have your union mail directed to you at your office.
Be aware that when you file a legal complaint with the court, the law enforcement is then taken out of your hands and put into the hands of the legal system. They can do a lot more than "scare" her, including put her in jail, and you have no control over the consequences. They will prosecute to the full extent of the law.

Yes, it is a federal crime to interfere with the delivery of the mail. Only the addressee or their designee can open the mail. You can report this to your local post office.
Since you are 19, you can avoid all the hassle by going to your local post office and opening a PO Box, then have all your mail sent there. You can get it all redirected too, so that you don't have to tell everyone what your new address is.

It is a Federal Offense to open mail that is NOT addressed to you. Since you are not a minor, the above statement would then apply to your Mom opening your mail.
Have a lovely rest of the evening....Happy Holidays.

Hi Whoa,
Yes it is illegal.
Contact your local
county clerk at the
post office and they´ll
give you all the details.
A good solution would be
to open a PO Box at your
USA Mail Office. You have
to go collect it, but beats the
other alternatives, no?
Good luck, and defend your
rights!

yes it's illegal but to sue her sounds petty. You may remind her (come to terms with her thru yelling and shouting mostly likely)that you are no longer a minor and she isn't to open your mail anymore and that technically it's illegal and you don't want to have to pursue action on it but then she will threaten to throw your butt out so all in all you will probably be better off getting a po box.
a po box would be cheaper.
Good luck

You're 19, yes you can move out. You can do anything if you're determined, so you must not really want to move. And I'm sure its illegal, but thats not going to stop her. Get brave, get guts, get a job and move out

I think it is illegal for anyone (whether they live in your house or not) to open mail that is not addressed to them by name. I believe that is why schools send report cards to "the parents of...." and why junk mail is often addressed to the "current resident of..."
