These are really 2 different solutions:
1. Free Anti-virus - I would use an online scanner to scan your computer such as Trend Micro's HouseCall(http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp).
2. Free Anti-spyware - For this the best option is Microsoft's Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx). Also, Spybot Search and Destroy is a good option that is free (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1).

Scan the PC with a standard antivirus software. If you donot have one, I can give a few links that offer free virus and spyware removers...!You may be having a virus or spyware installed on your PC. Norton, AVG , Avast are free antivirus software. Ad-aware, Ewido are free spyware removers. You can download free softwares at

Got to Download.com. Find the program AdAware SE Personal. It is a free version and it works very well. It worked so well that i purchased the full version which is even better and gives real-time security.

Reformat, keep inportant files on a USB HD, map the my dos folder there so a reformat is nothing since all important dats in on USB HD, and not on C:\!!
