X is actually the Greek symbol chi meaning Christ. It was used as a way to shorten the word yet maintain the same meaning.

Mostly it is just to make it shorter, but there is a move out there to remove any and all references to christ .It's have a happy holiday etc. instead of HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS,henry

I totally agree. I would never buy anything that advertised itself with the x. (I have also refused to ever again use the abbreviation for orange juice but that's another story)

when i was younger i heard it was bad to do that because it was putting a "x" through christ. thats just what i heard though. not sure of what the real meaning is.
