Hi Michael

Here are some remedies.

1. Very effective is the combination of bath and massage, particularly with a soothing oil, such as camomile. Herbal oils are easily made; check "Preparations," Camomile and linden tea both can help a person relax and sleep. For a really stubborn case, take a cup of valerian tea or a couple of capsules with warm water. A pleasant walk out of doors can help a person relax enough to sleep. Sometimes the person's blood sugar is a little low, and simply eating a piece of fresh fruit can put a person out. Warm tea with honey will do the same.

2.Not Hot Cocoa: Many of the people of Dutch extraction, that is, everyone from the Old Dutch Cleanser Girl to the Boy Who Put His Finger in the Dike, were prone to prepare themselves a nighttime cup of hot cocoa for the insomnia which prevailed in the land. Now...how can cocoa possibly cure insomnia when it contains 13.5 mg. of caffeine per cup? This practice was so extensive that it not only included family, but servants and visitors as well. This toxic dose of chocolate was topped with another toxin: cream or marshmallow. Anybody for a little chamomile?

3.Juices: Lettuce, celery, apple, onion.

4.Squash Seeds: Boiling squash seeds for a half an hour and then drinking the water has the effect of calming the nerves and helping in cases of insomnia and is good also for any urinary inflammation.

5.Vegetables for Insomnia: Cabbage, carrots, celery, collard greens, kale, lettuce, parsnips, potatoes, spinach, turnip greens, squash.

Quick Action Plan for Sleep Disorders

1. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, sugar, salt, refined carbohydrates and unhealthy partially hydrogenated fats.

2. Emphasize a diet high in fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, as well as easily digested protein foods and whole-grain, complex carbohydrates.

3. Avoid eating late in the evening, which can unsettle your stomach and make sleep difficult.

4. Supplement with B-complex vitamins, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin E, calcium, chromium, copper (taken away from zinc), magnesium, and the amino acids phosphatidyl-serine and L-tryptophan.

5. Melatonin supplements taken for short periods of time can help relieve insomnia, as well as advanced and delayed phase syndromes and REM behavior disorder. Start with a small dose (0.5 to 2.0 mg) taken one hour before bedtime.

6. Useful herbs include chamomile, hops, linden flower, lime blossom, passionflower, skullcap, and valerian root.

7. Try meditating before you retire for the night to ease your mind of worries and promote relaxation.

8. Sleep at least six feet away from all electric appliances and devices, unplugging them before you go to sleep. Also avoid using electric blankets and electric heating pads, as well as waterbeds.

9. Avoid lying in bed for other activities, such as reading or watching television. Make your bedroom a place devoted solely to sleeping.

10. If you can't fall asleep, get out of bed and go to another room to engage in a relaxing activity. When you start to feel drowsy, return to your bedroom and go to sleep.

Best of health to both of you

Cheers

Well as a previous fellow sufferer I'd like to offer this - it worked for me.
First regulate the diet - have breakfast - I have 2 tablespoons of oats with a banana, eat properly throughout the day and do not eat after 6pm if you manage it 8pm if not, let the body rest from food, it starts to wind down - drink lots of water and have a glass before you go to bed. Make sure the food is nutritionally balanced, and take a multivitamin.

As soon as I did this I started sleeping well - before I would eat haphazardly or even not at all and then not sleep.

Another (old chinese remedy) thing i did in extreme circumstances was to put my feet in cold water - or a milder version, stand still on a cold floor, the energy goes to the feet, so the 'head' energy is not left to run round in circles (particularly good if there are too many things going on in your head t get to sleep.

Oh, exercise daily helps too - just 10 mins doing anything outdoors so the blood gets well oxygenated is beneficial. (qigong, taichi, cycling, skipping etc.

Good luck.

i suffered from insomina for awhile and the doctors asked me if the matress i had was old. He told me that the theres a matress that supports ur body and a pillow that supports ur neck and head so ur spinal cord is straight (sillie i think u spell it) and if u don't have the proper matress and pillow it can cause insomina. then if that wouldn't work we go for pills. theres also a feng shui if u believe in it. Your bed can not face the door.

Hope this helps u out..

I do!!! But perhaps I'll be mean and not tell................ O.k. just kidding. If you are deficient in essential fatty acids in your diet you will probably have no end of trouble sleeping. Ensuring you get recommended daily allowances of the essential fatty acids (EFA'S) should have you sleeping like a baby in no time. ie.- tuna, salmon. Make sure you get plenty of protein and calcium too. i.e.: protein enriched milk or substitute.....Good Luck:)

no known cure. just alternative stuff.
dont try to count women; something might happen.!.
dont count sheep you might get hungry.
sometimes you have to make something to do to fall asleep by yourself. others remedies might not work for you.
i usually have a midnight snack then go to bed and then im alright.

I just want to bless the makers of Ambien and Lunesta. I have tried all the alternative stuff and to no avail so I got samples from the doc. These meds will help you even if you are a chronic insomniac, and the Lunesta you can take long term. Best of luck to you!!

I think it depends on where the insomnia stems from. My eating disorder causes me to stay awake all night obsessing over food and imperfections... whiskey helps, though.

I have suffered insomnia for many years. Everyone seems to think they know how to stop it, so far nothing has worked for me including meds.

Discipline and relaxation. You're letting your body rule, so get a grip.
