I need to know i if should buy one, or see if I have one and I'm doing something wrong. I'm a step-by-step kind of guy, so be detailed

start / control panel / system/ hardware / device manager
and then click on DVD/CD Rom drives. This will tell you your drives.

Either it should say it on the front of the drive...like DVD R/RW ...or go to Start - My computer and look at the Devices & Removable Storage there, it should say it....Mine says DVD-RW Drive(E:)..hope this helps

Impossible to tell software wise as you haven't provided any information about which operating system you're using!

Best thing to do? Check on the drive itself. You'll see "RW" if its a burner.
