Up front I would say that is a good laptop. It is one that can be upgraded to Vista and has plenty of horsepower to run Windows XP.
The longer answer to that questions is it depends on what you are using it for:
Video and Photo Editing: I have a similar laptop and do a bunch of video and photo editing. The core 2 duo really helps but I have another gig of RAM which is super helpful.
Basic Pictures, Music, Video, Multimedia: I would add a little more space to your hard drive if you plan on storing photos and music on this computer. They can fill up that Hard Drive pretty fast. Howerver Hard Drive Space is so cheap you could just upgrade or add an external drive later with no problem.
Gaming: If you are looking to use this as a gaming laptop. I would add a higher graphics card, bigger screen and more memory.
In conclusion, I would say you can't go wrong with Core 2 Duo that can handle almost any task. If you are looking to use it as a basic home computer you got a great machine.

As soon as you state that it has a core2Duo under $1200, I say yes.
I have these questions:
Who makes it (Warranty)
Where did you purchase it from (Returnability)
Is the video card discrete? Does it share ram with the rest of the computer?
Is this price after rebates? If so you have to calculate the probability of getting your money and the inconvenience it causes to submit.
After I submitted this answer I saw that someone actually said you could have gotten a better deal. While this may be true, I doubt too many people would feel comfortable buying a computer off the back of a truck. Also, this system will last you for a long time. It is no poser, but maintains enough power to satisfy a gamer and a video editor, both demanding things to ask from a laptop, let alone a desktop.

Go for a Dell or Toshiba, you can get the same specs for almost the same price. Acer is not a very good laptop manufacturer. Dell or Toshiba make better laptop. If you have a budget, try Toshiba first, it may be a little bit cheaper than a Dell.

Acer is under rated. It's actually a good system. nvidia is a good graphics card. your ram amount is gr8. Having bluetooth is good. but $1180 seems a bit steep for that system. Think you could have gotten a better deal.
