I had very stupidly lent ot my lap top to a friend to do research for home work, cant power up he set a power on password key,,,, any help

If you are talking about a password in the bios...
each laptop is different.. you might just replace the bios chip, or short a few of its pins in the motherboard... but the latest laptops come with stronger protections each time.
Take it to a technician. Your friend pays!!

If the problem is the windows XP password... boot the machine with a Hiren's boot CD, ERD commander or Linux and change the password..
there are many tutorials on how to do this... google it.

open back compartment you will see a flat round silver battery remove it counct to 20 replace it and your pc will reset itself ,other wize your going to nock it out of your friend.
