Thats my processor.

The processor is rated at 1.6 Ghz. I can overclock it to 1.8Ghz, but anything greater than that my computer doesn't turn on. I have heard that semprons can be overclocked to 2.0Ghz and beyond! I there something I am not doing. Please list all the steps I should be doing, or is my hardware preventing me from overclocking further.

I found that the CPU is not really an issue if you are running at 1.5 to 2Ghz. The problem is the RAM speed as well as the R/W access time of the hard drive. A superfast CPU can do nothing if it cannot access the data from the hard drive. I have a Intel P4 CPU at 2.0Ghz. I replaced the Hard drive, now the computer is super-fast in comparison to what it was before.

Your problem is the sempron is a very basic value processor and is not stable at high clock speeds. People who overclock them to 2.0GHz or more are not lying and I do not doubt that it can go beyond that. But as you listed, it will overclock further but it is only stable up to 1.8GHz. You need to purchase a better processor such as the Athlon 64 to overclock anymore. The processor of which I am speaking can be found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103605 .

Also what OS are you using. If you are using XP you should download NVIDIAs ntune software. It is very comprehensive. It can tune your system and test for stability at the same time.

Good luck.

The other guy is right about the sempron processor but if you really want a processor for overclocking get intel's new core 2 duo. They are blowing AMD out of the water without being overclocked.
