I don't think there is a difference. You might be thinking of being in love as referring to the feeling you have for a boyfriend or girlfriend. Whereas, loving someone could be anyone from parents, friends, family, etc.

Simply loving someone is basically just caring for them more deeply that you would for a good friend. But being in love with someone could make you cry, smile, and feel emotions that don't have names. You think about them almost every second of the day.

Unfortunately the distinction of loving someone and being in love is not clear in gay communities. As you can read in this category most best friends fall for one another. Loving someone is caring for him or her as a good friend without any sexual pressures. Being in love is beyond friendship, more intimacy and involves sex later on. For this reason, I do not really have a best friend. In fact I consider my boyfriend as my lover and at same time my best friend.

Frankly, I think it's the basically the same thing except that with romantic love there is the physical attraction coupled with the loving them. The trick is figuring out if you truly love them or not in the first place without the pshysical attraction (and if they love you too but you didn't really ask about that)

That is so complicated but there is a difference. For instance I was married & I will always love my ex husband for the good & bad years we had & especially for giving me a child but I don't love him because he's a loser. I really don't mean that in a bad way but he doesn't love himself & when you don't love yourself it's very hard to expect someone else to love you. I hope that made sense

"in love" also includes sexual and romantic feelings and a commitment to making a relationship work.. (on top of the basic love qualities that include liking someone, caring for someone, etc..)
