Sharks do not attack humans because the sharks are unfamiliar with humans when we enter the water. Most sharks have never seen a human and since we are not native to their ocean habitat, they do not know what to make of us. Usually the shark will decide that humans are not worth the risk. There is also the issue that humans are way to bony for any shark to waste its time consuming, thats one reason they will often bite and release. It's true that any shark of about six feet or more in length would be able to kill a man but most sharks are under that length and are completely harmless. Even the sharks that are able to kill humans, if handled properly, can be encountered safely.

Only if a shark is desparate for food (once again, starving or pregnant) will it acutlay digest any of a human that it bites off

Sharks mistake humans as food when they attack, but usually once they bite into it, they realize it's not. They will only continue to attack if they feel threatened, but they won't eat them.
