...do you think you should be directly implied in it or detached from it so that you can see the big picture?

This question is more of a metaphorical one for me, but take it as you want.

I think you have to take a step back to get the big picture. If you let your emotions influence you by getting to close you could make a mistake.

I choose the latter... by being forced to see the whole picture, you are not only going to understand what you are seeking, but how it is affected, or affects, everything else involved...

Both. Look at it from all angles, frames, and viewpoints. This will allow you to know the subject in question better than you know yourself.
