I recieved an envelope in the mail the other day with several travelers cheques made out to me. No return address was on the envelope and I do not know anyone in Togolaise nor would anyone send me travelers cheques in the amounts that these are. I know this is too good to be true and it is some sort of scam but I did not respond to any e-mail, advertisement, phone call or anything of the sort. I am befuddled as to why anyone would send me these cheques. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Yes, I received travellers cheques from Togo (Togolaise is the French spelling, they speak French there). The envelope had no return address. I was asked to help with a business by cashing the cheques and Western Union or Moneygram the money, keeping 10% for myself for my trouble. I called American Express, they told me they cheques were not valid. They gave me a tracking number to write on them and asked me to mail them in to Salt lake City, Utah. She said I could report to www.ic3.gov for Internet fraud cases. My advice would be to call American Express, the toll free number on their website.

Well at our age you don't have to respond to any e-mail or etc to get such things, they just get your info from sites you use through many ways, don't have time to explain them now. What to do with the cheque? Just go to the nearest bank and check if they are legitimate, don't try to cash them until the bank confirms that they are OK, or you are in deep trouble.

Get wise !

Nothing is EVER 'free' .. you got sent 'cheques' in the post because some-one is trying to rip you off.

You want to guess how this scam operates ?

Well here's one way ...

When you try to 'cash' the cheques, they have you arrested for trying to pass stolen cheques.

When the case comes up, they offer to 'settle' out of court if you pay them $$$$ for their 'legal fees'.
